Ask yourself. Which is it you seek? Relief or release?
Does this sound familiar?
I just want to stop the pain. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Or does this?
I’ll do anything it takes…anything. My life is in the toilet. I give up. I cannot control this any more. I cannot do this alone.
Big difference. It’s obvious, right?
Grace falls evenly on all of us. Willingness differs. Sponsorship differs. Meetings differ. You can go to the meetings and still die from progressive obsession. Why is that?
On the one hand, it depends on why you go to meetings or rehab. On the other hand, it also depends on whether your coffee is served up with the true message of the program — or just a ‘there, there’ pat on the back.
If a pat works, you don’t need the program. (That’s right. Reread it.) If you think you’ve tried 12 Step programs but they didn’t work, perhaps you could try this:
- Find a text-based meeting instead of a discussion meeting (unless your real problem is no one will listen to you)
- Find a sponsor who has experienced a spiritual awakening as the result of doing the Steps
- Put some action behind that rhetoric of ‘I’ll do anything it takes’.
Then you might truly have a chance to find release from the obsessive behavior and circular thinking that is tanking your life. If all you need is a little relief, well then, any discussion meeting will do. Here’s your coffee. Your choice. Your life.
